Extending Matters System
As you build the practice of focusing on what matters each day, you will undoubtedly want to start collating thoughts, ideas, prayers, insights, memories, or goals into Collections.
Collections are a way to sub-index into a top level index for convenient and fast reflection and recall.
For example, as you are journaling throughout your week, there might be a sunset that just hit different. It struck you, and you captured this memory in your [S]ummary on the day and prefixed your note with a tag [Memory]. As the week wrapped up, and you took the 7 minutes to look back on your week you come across said memory note about such a stunning sunset. While there may be other memories noted, this one stood out to you and you want to make sure that as the year ends and you look back, this memory will be there for recollection.
TIP: Be consistent with tags. It makes quick scanning more useful.
A great way to organize this is by taking a quick moment to reference the insert/book number and the page number the note is on, and add a summary note to a collection called “Memories”.
In this sense, you can have a top level index for each year that is comprised of page/book locations where your collections live. In this case, your “Memories” collection might live on book 0 page 2 and noted in your top level index on page 1. And within the collection you might reference book 2 page 43. So your collection entry might look something like:
002.43 | One of the most gorgeous sunsets I have ever seen!
Now your index system is layered & collated in whatever fun or useful way you like, all while allowing the day to day macro journaling to carry on as usual. Indexes point to collections that point to entries. For a more practical example with step by step walkthrough see our blog post Wrapping Up Your Week With Matters.
